C'est par des températures hivernales que les Luxembourgeois se sont retrouvés une nouvelle fois en ce premier dimanche de Carême pour enflammer les châteaux de bois, patiemment construits depuis des semaines, et ainsi chasser symboliquement l'hiver.
"Nous avons pris plus ou moins un mois pour le construire car nous n'avons que travailler le week-end", raconte Jil Hahn, présidente du club des jeunes à Bertrange. Le château est fabriqué avec des palettes glanées de toute part dans la commune, mais aussi les sapins de Noël récupérés.
Certaines mises à feu de "Buergen" (châteaux), comme à Bertrange, sont précédés de longues retraites aux flambeaux ("Fakelzuch").

Chaque localité organise son propre "Buergbrennen". C'est surtout une belle occasion pour se retrouver entre voisins et résidents de la commune.
Dans certains villages, il est encore d'usage que le dernier couple marié en date ou une personnalité locale allume le bûcher.
